Complexics-1

Seminars for transdisciplinarity

The first seminar of the series Complexics was carried out on Wednesday, 26th February 2014, at 18:00., in Sala de professors [Professors' room] of the Faculty of Philology, UB (Aribau, 2). This seminar was divided into two parts:

    1. Short introduction of the number 11 of the journal LSC – Llengua, societat i comunicació [Language, Society and                         Communication], about ‘Language and complexity’.

    2. Complexity: networks, networks of networks, and so on (video)
        By Albert Díaz-Guilera
Professor and director of the Fundamental Physics Department, UB
Member of The Complex Systems Society
Coordinator of the network complexitat.CAT (Catalan network for the Study of Complex Systems)

- Summary
Complexity is extended across multiple scales, from atoms to galaxies, which form intricate geometries . The emergent complex behavior may have different origins, but nowadays it is clear that, beyond the nonlinear interactions between units, the topology of the interaction plays a fundamental role at all levels. Moreover, networks are interacting at different levels. In this conference, we will review the different levels of description of living systems on which we meet and show how complex networks emerge at different scales and how they interact. This goes from the cellular level through metabolic networks or networks of gene regulation to networks of individuals worldwide, such as Facebook and Twitter, in the society of information technology and communication, and networks of interaction of species in complex ecosystems.

The conference is a transdisciplinary invitation for interested people in linguistic and communication systems so that they know the latest contributions to the sciences of complexity. The human linguistic phenomenon is a  clearly complex and multidimensional fact, so the experts must not remain ignorant and absent to what the other disciplines are developing and it may be of help in the renewal of our theoretical and conceptual fields. The explanation of the professor Diaz-Guilera can be very useful for us towards the implementation of new ideas and tools in our theorizing and research.
